*Legal Storm Continues for Vaa Vaathiyaar as Madras High Court Issues Garnishee Order against film partners Think Music, Amazon, Zee and others*
The ongoing legal troubles surrounding the unreleased film Vaa Vaathiyaar shows no sign of calming. Days after the Madras High Court restrained the theatrical release of the film by an order dated 2nd December 2025, another setback emerged this time in the form of a garnishee order passed by the Commercial Division of the Madras High Court on 8th December 2025.
In a commercial suit filed by Sanraj Motion Pictures LLP, the Court has issued a direction to four major exploitation partners of Vaa Vaathiyaar namely Think Music, Amazon Prime, Zee Entertainment (Zee Tamil), and PHF Films, restraining each of them from making any payments to the film’s producer, Studio Green Films Pvt. Ltd., up to a sum of Rs. 27.50 Crore. This relief it seems has been granted in connection a contractual default by Studio Green arising out of an earlier assignment arrangement for the film Kanguva. In that agreement, Sanraj claims to have paid the entire assignment fee and despite which Studio Green has failed to perform its own obligation, as a result the agreement is said to be terminated and amounts under the agreements is contractually refundable. The Court observed that prima facie, Studio Green had agreed to refund the assignment amount in the event of breach.
The garnishee order effectively freezes money pipelines linked to Vaa Vaathiyaar, directly impacting any settlement proceeds or future exploitation revenues from digital, satellite, and music licensing streams. The Vaa Vaathiyaar film partners have been directed to withhold all payable moneys until the next hearing.
This development comes on the heels of another High Court order injuncting the release of Vaa Vaathiyaar in theatres, thereby stalling the film’s commercial rollout at both distribution and platform levels. The combination of injunction on release and the garnishee directive highlights a tightening legal matrix around the project.
Observers indicate that Sanraj Motion Pictures has adopted an aggressive enforcement strategy in the dispute, actively pursuing legal remedies to secure its alleged dues from Studio Green and its known and unknown asociates. Industry insiders note that the recent court orders not only deepens financial and legal challenges for Studio Green Films but also cast uncertainty on the fate of Vaa Vaathiyaar’s distribution deals.
