 Tamil podcast consumption is on the rise on Spotify in India

Underscoring this growth, the audio streaming platform hosted its first-ever Spotify Podcasters’ Day in Chennai



Chennai, July 27, 2024: Since the launch of podcasts on Spotify in India over five years ago, an increasing number of listeners have been turning to the medium to consume and discover content across languages and genres. 


In India, listeners on Spotify consume podcasts across several Indian languages, including Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, and more, as well as English. Amongst these, consumption in languages such as Tamil has seen steady growth. 

Today, Tamil is amongst the top three most consumed podcast languages on Spotify in India

Consumption of Tamil podcasts has grown by over 85% in the last two years alone

In Tamil podcasts, comedy is the most consumed genre, accounting for over 50% of total consumption.

On Friday, Spotify hosted its fifth edition of Spotify Podcasters’ Day, and its first in Chennai. Creators from across the city attended, as RJ Balaji took the stage for a conversation that highlighted his journey as a creator, and talked about why podcasting is a medium all creators should explore. The evening also spotlighted several local podcasts, such as Schumy Vanna Kaviyangal, Om Creem, Vocal Oli by Vijay Varadharaj, MBA Made Simple, Open Ah Peslama? by Vardhini Padmanabhan, Fries with Potate by Sameeha Mariam, Timepass with Das by Kishen Das, The Book Show by RJ Ananthi, That’s what she said! by Mercy John, and Kadhai Osai by Deepika Arun. Unni Nambudripad, Podcast Lead, Spotify India, talked about the audio streaming platform’s podcast journey in India, and Sai Abhyankkar, a Tamil singer, music producer, and composer - who is currently making waves on Spotify charts with his singles “Aasa Kooda” and “Katchi Sera” - performed to close out the night.


Spotify continues to invest in the local artist community and creators, with over 28,000 Indian artists today using Spotify for Artists, and more than 2,00,000 podcasts created using the platform in 2023 alone.
